Intellectual property

Kenya is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and of the Paris Union (International Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property). Kenya is also a member of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and a signatory to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks. 

The legal framework for intellectual property rights protection are as follows:

(i) Industrial Property Act 2001 for patents, trademarks, service marks, industrial designs and utility models (Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI))

(ii) Copyright Act 2001for literary and artistic works (Copyright Board of Kenya)

(iii) Varieties Act of Kenya for the Protection of new varieties of plants (Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS))
