On Tuesday, June 18, staff members from BDO East Africa (Rwanda) honored the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro District.
At this poignant event, they paid homage to the over 97,000 victims interred at the memorial. “The memorial garden and the leaders' messages reflect a strong commitment to a brighter future for Rwanda. My advice to young people is to foster reconciliation and avoid conflict,” she said.
Clément Kabano Niyitegeka, Partner at BDO EA Rwanda, noted that 70 percent of their staff were born after the genocide, highlighting the importance of educating them about their country’s history and achievements post-genocide to inspire continued progress.
Heshima Olexa, a staff member born after the genocide, acknowledged the critical role of remembrance and historical education in preventing history from repeating itself.
“Commemorating today provided a valuable opportunity to learn about the past. As we honor our loved ones, we also educate ourselves about Rwanda’s history and work towards ensuring such tragedies never happen again,” Heshima remarked.
